advance the ladder Nov 09, 2017

At the men’s Advance events (www.EatSleepAdvance.com  ) we outline a simple process to help you move from where you are to where you’re designed to be.

The process is simple. So so simple that I’m routinely surprised that it’s not more commonly used.

Here it is:

First, you’ve got to admit where you are now AND decide where you want to go

The problem with this is that a lot of us don’t like where we are.

Sure, maybe we’re happy about some parts of our life (i.e., we’re crushing it at work) but not other areas (example: our  marriage  is on the rocks, or our health took a backseat to the late night hours we spend cranking out all of that work).

At the Advance we encourage guys to define where they want to be in multiple areas of life. Face it, we’re not just workers. Or husbands. Or gym-guys. Or entrepreneurs and creatives. Or just fathers. We’re all of that.

And, sure,...

Healing + Health- Podcast #35

healing health podcast Nov 06, 2017

Somebody asked me a few weeks ago, “Why do you teach natural health?”

By that, they meant something like this: “You teach grace and healing… why do we need natural health if we have supernatural power available to us?”

It’s a great question.

The sarcastic reply would be, “Why do you need doctors and Western medicine if we have supernatural power available? Whereas ‘church people’ seem hesitant to venture into the natural health waters for fear that they’ll contract ‘new age’ demons, few of them give a second thought about rushing to the doc in the box, big pharma, or invasive surgeries…”

Why do you need that if you have supernatural power?

The honest reply, though, the sincere one that penetrates the heart… and loves deeply… and is THE RIGHT answer (I believe) is multifaceted:

First, we have far more control over our health than we’ve been taught. We’re not victims...

Are you climbing the right ladder? In the right place?

In a previous post I talked about what happens when you lose your “why” (https://www.overflowfaith.com/blog/losingwhy ). The short version…

If you don’t stay in touch with your heart, then the INSPIRATION (which is what SHOULD drive you) gets eclipsed by the IMPLEMENTATION strategy (which should never drive you).

Here’s what’s wrong with getting it backwards: the “thing” you choose to do can never be about HOW you do it…

For example-

  • Dating your spouse is NEVER about going out to eat at a nice restaurant, watching a certain movie… relaxing as you walk through the park… or sitting quietly by a fire. Those are all HOWs…
  • Dating IS about connecting with your spouse.

And-

  • Spending time with your kids is NEVER about tossing a baseball, watching a series of Christmas movies every night of the holidays (one of our kids’ favs), or making s’mores in the backyard....

Reaping & Sowing AND Natural Consequences vs. Punishment- Podcast #34

legalism podcast salvation Oct 30, 2017

On the 3rd day of Creation, the “seed principle” of sowing and reaping was introduced. Many of us just ASSUME that it only has to do with plants and biology, but this principal is a “law” that we can see in every area of life…

In this talk, I first define the concept of reaping & sowing. Then, I talk about the Machiavellian fallacy we sometimes import into our theology. Finally, we dive into a few practical examples of where we see real life examples as it relates to sickness, disease, “losing” healing miracles, and other theological landmines….

First, four points about reaping and sowing…

Here are the four points. You always…

1. Reap WHAT you sow >>>

Farmers all understand this. Kindergartners do, too :-)

If you plant corn, you’ll reap corn- not tomatoes. If you plant squash, you won’t harvest bacon.

It sounds odd, I know, but many people believe…

… that you can sow...

Living a fully charged life- from the inside out

For the past few years I’ve written and talked a lot about the WHAT, the HOW, and the WHY (as well as the WHO and YOU).

The simple chart below helps me clarify the way in which we relate to each of these. Notice:

  • WHAT is an idea that connects with your HEAD
  • HOW is an implementation strategy (for the WHAT) that connects with your HANDS
  • WHY is the inspiration… the reason you implement (how) your idea (what)… it connects with your HEART

I know. The analogy isn’t foolproof. No simple formula ever is. However, it helps us clarify how we relate to our goals (regardless of whether those are faith goals, fitness goals, family goals, etc.), and it helps us see which areas are more important.

A “why” drives it all…

Over the past two years in particular, I’ve learned that the WHAT and the HOW are susceptible to radical change. And I do mean radical. What you're doing one day and how you're doing it can literally...

You're Not Being Punished- Podcast #33

God isn’t going to chastise you for something Jesus has already been punished for…

Ride with me here…

The prophet Isaiah foretold- centuries before His birth- that Jesus would bring healing by His death. In fact, he says, “He was wounded for our transgressions. He was pierced for our iniquities.” Then- “By His stripes we are healed” (see Isaiah 53:3-5).

Notably, Isaiah speaks about all of the in PAST tense- as if it’s already DONE- even though he lived a long, long time before Jesus’ birth.

That leads us to two New Testament authors that directly reference Isaiah’s declaration. Notably, one of them, Matthew uses Isaiah’s passage to explain WHY Jesus healed so many people on the way to the Cross.

In effect, Matthew says, “Yes. Jesus was going to die for all of these people. And He was purchasing their healing… So, He healed them throughout His ministry, because of...

When you confuse your heart with your hands, you lose your way

advance the ladder Oct 17, 2017

Here’s what happens when you lose your “why”- you confuse the implementation strategy with your reason for having a strategy in the first place.

Let me explain…

At the Advance we teach that the best dreams all have a few elements:

  • The WHAT- actually defines the dream. It describes where we are now and where we want to be in the future. The WHAT is the goal…
  • The HOW- is the implementation strategy. It’s the MEANS we use to accelerate towards and achieve the WHAT.
  • The WHY- is the reason we do it all… it’s the thing that drives us, that motivates us to move towards that preferred future rather than remaining where we are.

Here’s what it looks like (notice that each corresponds with either your head, your hands, or your heart… because it’s either an IDEA, an IMPLEMENTATION, or the INSPIRATION):

Confusion with your "why"

A lot of people get confused about their why. In fact, it’s kinda...

Everyone Can Be Healed- Podcast #32

Sometimes, what we need betrays our theological box. So the box has to go. That is, we find ourselves facing a circumstance where we DESPERATELY need God to shine… yet it doesn’t fit the way we’ve been told He moves….

Physical healing is one of these areas. It’s a box we create, and a box that can’t withstand the pressure of reality.

My experience…

In the past I came in contact with two groups on two different extremes that theologically didn’t believe in physical healing. It didn’t fit their “intellectual system.”

On one hand, Christian fundamentalists assumed that Jesus healed, and that the disciples healed. But, healing passed away once we had the Bible. We no longer needed miracles to “know” how God is since we could just read about Him in print…

Say what?

Yeah, that’s what they said.

Some of the leaders in this movement even said that when we see healing-...

Being realistic about the change you want to see

advance the ladder Oct 10, 2017

Several posts ago I talked about the importance of defining where you are AND where you want to be. Both are important. (This assumes you’re looking for change in some area of life, of course. If you’re not, scroll to the next post.)

If you don’t know where you WANT TO BE, then there’s no way to make a plan to head in any particularly direction. You’ll just find yourself, well… wandering aimlessly.

The other side of the equation is important, too. If you don’t know where you are NOW, then there’s no way to define your next step…

After defining these two “locations,” you can start moving towards your destiny…

  • Whether it’s losing weight…
  • Whether it’s gaining a new skill…
  • Whether it’s building a relationship…
  • Whether it’s crushing a business goal…
  • Whether it’s getting out of debt and planning for a better future….

Your mission...

The Guilt Trip is Over- Podcast #31

identity podcast shame Oct 09, 2017

For some of us, it’s time to “get over it” and “move on” from the past.

Let me explain...

It’s easy to get stuck looking in the rearview mirror- gazing in the reasons WHY you can’t move forward...

If some of the clutter in your past was your fault, you might feel like you “owe it” to others (or even yourself) to STAY stuck…

If you’ve hurt others, they might actually be more comfortable with you being stuck, right

Here’s the deal- we live in an age of grace. It’s an era in which God doesn’t hold the past against you. In fact, He distinctly declares that He’s NOT holding your past over you. He’s FORGOTTEN it (see Jeremiah 31:31-34, Hebrews 8:12).

It’s hard for us to forget sin and the junk of the past, so we assume God can’t, either. He tells us clearly, though, “We don’t think the same way” (Isaiah 55:8).

Furthermore, God not only forgets...
