32 | š§©Interdependent Realization
I almost titled this talk āSpirit, Soul, and Body,ā but the term āInterdependent Realizationā stuck out as we prepped for the recent GY6 workshop.
Hereās what you need to know about Interdependent Realization (a phrase I hijacked from my friend, Mike Sanders, who wrote the forward for GY6ā see Mikeās links below)ā¦
1ļøā£ There are two unseen parts of usā and they are different.
(Now, although we discuss these three areas as ādifferent parts,ā understand that they each impact one another. This is what Mike calls Interdependent Realization. The body, the soul, and the spirit donāt exist in isolation from one another.)
Itās easy to distinguish the āseenā part of us (body), but differentiating between the unseen parts is a little trickyā¦
š
Hebrews 4:12 shows us that are āunique,ā though. In fact, the Bible helps us discern which part is soul and which part is spiritā¦
š§© The spirit is the part of us that is āONEā with Christ, as of the Cross (see Romans 6:6, 1 Corinthians 6:17, and Galatians 2:20).
š§© The soul is the part of us thatās āin process.ā Itās our mind, our thoughts, our will⦠(read: our personality), and is the piece of us thatās being transformed (see Romans 12:1-2, Philippians 2:12).
2ļøā£ God intends to redeem ALL of youā not just your spirit.
3 John 2 is a prayer that the Apostle John offeredā¦
āMay all go well with you and may you be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.ā
Some translations propose, āMay you prosper in all things, as it goes with your soul.ā
John reminds us that God wants to do a work in every area of our lifeā even beyond the spirit, soul, and body. He wants to impact our families, our finances, our faith, our friendships⦠every area.
š
Paul prayed something similar in 1 Thessalonians 5:23:
āMay your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blamelessā¦ā
3ļøā£ We reap the ābenefitsā of the āpartā of us we most fully lean intoā¦
The soul is essential. God doesnāt want to eradicate it.
In fact, Proverbs 11:30 suggests, āHe who wins souls is wise.ā
The soul is that part of us that interacts with the worldā with people and places and opportunities and obstaclesā¦
It receives vital information from the environment around us.
But weāre not designed to be controlled by itā anymore than a thermometer is designed to control the temperature of your house (read that carefully: a thermostat sets the temperature / a thermometer just tells you what the current temperature is).
Galatians 5:25 tells us to ākeep in step with the spiritā (read: not the soul).
This is a military marching term that speaks to walking in the cadence of the Kingdomā¦
š„¾ So how do we do it?
We go back to that term INTERDEPENDENT REALIZATIONā¦
⦠and we affirm that:
ā Each of these parts of us were created by Godā theyāre part of a creation that was deemed āgoodā (see the refrain throughout Genesis 1).
ā Each piece of the human puzzleā as is all of creationā is part of Godās current redemption project (see Acts 3:21, Isaiah 59:17-20)
ā Everything exists in, for, and through Him (Colossians 1:16-20), including each part of who we are. To say it as Paul did, āin Him we live and move and breathe and have our beingā (Acts 17:28)ā spirit, soul, body⦠all.
