Moral Injury = Overcoming Guilt & Shame

In this talk we build on the previous two, so you may want to roll back to the discussion on PTSD ( https://www.Jenkins.tv/blog/wholeness ) or even the intro to emotions in general ( https://www.Jenkins.tv/blog/baggage ) if you haven’t yet listened to those.

Here, I discuss Moral Injury- a close counterpart to PTSD that often looks like it and manifests symptoms in similar ways. However, despite that cliche that if it “looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck… then it’s a duck,” when it comes to PTSD and Moral Injury, the two are different.

Turns out, if you treat someone for PTSD yet they have Moral Injury, the treatment plan won’t work. It will be ineffective.

Just like this- if you treat someone for a broken leg but they really have a broken arm, your treatment will also be ineffective.

We’ve got to address the actual issue, the goal (again) being to walk in total wholeness.

In this talk I cover four main ideas that...

Emotional Health is a piece of the whole

In this talk we take last week’s release a step further (review here: https://www.Jenkins.tv/blog/baggage). I pulled the content from this talk from some info I planned to teach to a live audience re: emotional wholeness…

Emotional Health = part of total health

We’re all multi-faceted people, having various parts to us.

  1. Physical
  2. Spiritual
  3. Intellectual
  4. Social / relational
  5. Emotional

We readily identify with the first four- but maybe not the fifth.

And, we generally OWN and notice the OBVIOUS issue in any area with the exception of emotional issues.

(I spoke more about this in this talk, https://www.jenkins.tv/blog/checklist, where I actually begin with the same point.)

Turns out, though, that you’re only as strong as the weakest link.

Look at it this way: a 20-link chain with 19 links can carry 1,500 pounds and one link that can hold only 15 pounds will never lift more than 15 pounds. Regardless of how powerful the other 19 are, they’re held...

The PTSD Project & Handling Your Unclaimed Baggage

In this talk, I fire the podcast back up- after a long hiatus- and talk about a project I’ve been involved with for the past year +++). A few months ago, we released the book Warrior Hope, which I wrote with the Executive Director of Crosswinds Foundation- a nonprofit that’s been involved in the PSTD + Moral Injury space for 7 years and counting.

Last week we launched a group based on the book- a group currently being hosted at Hoover Tactical on Monday evenings, 6:30pm- 7:30pm.

Here are the main talking points from this podcast.

#1- Perception CAN be reality.

I’ve heard the phrase “perception is reality” a bunch of times. You probably have, too.

But, as correct as that statement sounds, it’s not accurate. Perception MIGHT be reality, but it might not be. Perception might just be the way you view things.

Let me explain…

You may have seen the cartoon online.

From one person’s perspective the number on the ground is clearly a 6. From...

Living a fully charged life- from the inside out

For the past few years I’ve written and talked a lot about the WHAT, the HOW, and the WHY (as well as the WHO and YOU).

The simple chart below helps me clarify the way in which we relate to each of these. Notice:

  • WHAT is an idea that connects with your HEAD
  • HOW is an implementation strategy (for the WHAT) that connects with your HANDS
  • WHY is the inspiration… the reason you implement (how) your idea (what)… it connects with your HEART

I know. The analogy isn’t foolproof. No simple formula ever is. However, it helps us clarify how we relate to our goals (regardless of whether those are faith goals, fitness goals, family goals, etc.), and it helps us see which areas are more important.

A “why” drives it all…

Over the past two years in particular, I’ve learned that the WHAT and the HOW are susceptible to radical change. And I do mean radical. What you're doing one day and how you're doing it can literally...

Edit your story- Podcast #26

cognitive health podcast Sep 04, 2017

John wrote, “Beloved, I pray you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers" (3 John 2). He prays for prosperity… in all things… and in health.

Notice, he wants us to abound in health and in "all things." Yet, it seems that THE SOUL IS THE MEASURE of how much we can carry- in the prosperity of “all things" and in our total health & wellness (which is far more than just physical, though physical health must be included here).

What’s the soul? The soul is the mind… and your emotions…

Here’s the deal: we often “spiritualize” or “futurize” the blessings of God, believing they only matter in the after-life.  When we do this, we reduce the stories of Scripture to allegory, effectively punting the promises of God to a time and  place where we don’t  experience the full benefits of them.  John assumed we could experience these blessings...

Clarity- Podcast #25

cognitive health podcast Aug 28, 2017

After taking a brief hiatus to discuss The Ladder & the men’s Advance material, we’re back to the Redemption series…

Remember, we’re redeemed (read: set free) by the blood of Jesus.

And, every place Jesus bled… well… He redeemed (set free) another facet of who we are or who we’re destined to become.

With this episode we begin discussing the actual places He bled AND the freedoms He’s won for us.

The first place He bled = the Garden of Gethsemane.

Symbolically, this is the SAME PLACE Adam gave up one of our most cherished freedoms, the freedom of the will. Since that time in which he intentionally defied God’s command, humanity’s ability to “choose to do right” has been tainted, marred, scarred.

Ask any parent and they’ll tell you- children are from Heaven, but they can act like hell. Tell them what to do, and they’ll figure out everything else- anything else-  that can...

You- OR- the inside changes before the outside EVER does (The Ladder series #6)- Podcast #24

We get enamored with external things- the things “out there.” The truth, though, is that the INSIDE changes before the OUTSIDE ever does. In fact, the greatness of what’s going on inside of you determines the altitudes you’ll reach in the world around you.

In this episode of the podcast, we take take the fifth (and final) rung of the ladder

Remember, with each rung we go higher AND closer to realizing our dreams…

  • What = the idea
  • How = implementation
  • Why = inspiration
  • Who = interdependence
  • You = individuality

Once you understand the power of the mind… and how it literally creates destiny, some of the most popular Bible verses make EVEN MORE sense. Things like…

  • “Take your thoughts captive” (2 Corinthians 10:5).
  • “Be transformed… by renewing your mind” (Romans 12:1-2).
  • “Be anxious for nothing…” (Philippians 4:6f).
  • “Think on things that are pure, lovely,...
